Evaluation, Question 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and converntions of real media products? (i.e music magazines)

Through the images above, this shows the similarities and differences between my masthead and the professional one. However, I mainly used this masthead to model my own. The use of the drop shadow on the Rolling Stone magazine makes the red writing stand out through using the white shadow. On my magazine masthead, I chose to use a black drop shadow as the background of my magazine is white and it would have blended in too much. Through using the black drop shadow is contrasts with the background and makes it clearer. However, there are also differences between the masthead's as the Rolling Stone title is centred whereas mine is left aligned. This is similar to most conventional music magazines such as 'NME' and 'Q' where the masthead's are at the left. However, in this instance, the Rolling Stone masthead is centred  I mainly used this masthead to model my own as the genre of my magazine and the Rolling Stone magazine is the same.

These images show how I have progressed my magazine where I have placed the image on the front cover. The image on the Q magazine is placed on the left hand side whereas on my magazine I have chosen to place my image on the right hand side. I decided to subvert the conventions and do this as the image looked lost on the left hand side due to the angle it was rotated. I then tried it on the right hand side to see if it appeared any better which it did. By rotating the image on the angle it is, it looked more professional overall. I decided to place and image on the front cover to grab the reader's attention like in the Q magazine. This will give a greater insight into what the magazine includes.

Where circled, this shows how I have based some of my ideas on the Q front cover above. I decided to use two colours like the Q magazine as it makes the name of the model stand out and grab the attention of the reader. The Q magazine uses the two colours red and white to correspond to the house style of the magazine and therefore U used white and green to stick to my own house style of my magazine.  Also, through making it the largest text on the page, readers will be automatically attracted to this copy. However, I decided to change the position of the text on my magazine as it looked too cluttered when it was placed in the same way as the Q magazine text is placed. I therefore then decided to keep the writing overlapping the main image so it is clear who the text is about and makes it simple for readers to understand. I chose to place my text in the centre and over the main image to make it stand out to the audience, grabbing the reader's attention and making it the first thing they see on the front cover.

From the image above, you can clearly see how I have modelled my contents page on a Q contents page. I chose to include 'REGULARS' and 'FEATURES' sections like the image above so readers can clearly see what is new in the magazine and what is expected. However, instead of using the term 'every month' I used the term 'REGULARS’ to reinforce how often certain aspects occur. I chose to place the sub headings in a separate box to make them stand out to the audience for clear orientation of the magazine. The Q magazine similarly does this by indicating the sub headings in a box of a different colour.

In the Q image above, it is clear that the picture of Adele is the main focus of the contents page as it is placed the across the centre of the page yet slightly to the right. Also, by making it the largest image on the page, this makes it stand out to the audience. The image on the Q magazine is also making direct eye contact with the camera as it is a conventional way to show images. Likewise, I chose to have my model looking directly at the camera. I decided to follow the conventions above to a certain extent as I chose differently to place the image directly in the centre, which will still grab the attention of readers.

From the image above, it shows how I have followed some of the conventions of a typical music magazine. From the KERRANG! contents page on the left, it shows various images which will attract readers to continue reading the magazine. Although the KERRANG! contents page shapes the smaller images around the main image, I chose to show them differently. Following the conventions of placing various images on the contents page will allow readers to gain information about what is to follow in the magazine. I chose to place my images in a line format as I believe they are easier to view and understand with them being in a neat style. Also, the KERRANG! magazine added page numbers in a different colour, corresponding to the image. This is a good way for readers to quickly find the page they desire. I also chose to do this, and place page numbers below the images so readers could directly see where they needed to go.

From the image above, you can see that the conventional way to structure and double page spread is to have the image on the left side and text on the right. Similarly, I chose to structure my page in this way as I believe it makes it clear and easy to interoperate. The conventional image type for a double page spread is usually a posed photograph where models are making direct eye contact with the camera to connect with the audience. In this case, I chose to subvert the convention and take an image where the model looks embarrassed and is hidden from the readers. This will instigate curiosity and make readers want to read the article.

The image above is from the popular music magazine 'NME.' It is conventional in most music magazines to use a stand first in order to present a small amount of information about the artist featured in the double page spread. I chose to follow this convention and place a stand first in my magazine double page spread to attract readers to read the article based on the information given in the stand first. I chose to place it in the same format as the image above as I believe it stands out to the audience as it is not columned like the article is, making readers notice it first, and read it before the article. Also in this magazine is a conventional drop cap where readers begin to read the article. I chose not to follow this convention as I believe through separating the stand first from the article; it is clear where readers need to begin.

Similarly to the image above, I have placed the name of the celebrity in my article at the top of the page where it is easy to see for readers. In the KERRANG! article above, two colours are used to show the name of the band featured in the article. I chose to also use two colours but use a shadow for the second colour. This is because I chose to name the article 'LEVI' instead of having a phrase or quotation. In this case, I would have used colours to represent the house style in the masthead. It is conventional to place the name of the celebrity in the top right hand corner, above the text to make it easy and clear for readers to interoperate. Likewise, I placed my masthead above the text to indicate immediately to readers who the article is about.
