Evaluation, Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task (the school magazine task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

 Final:                       Preliminary:

From the two images above, it is clear how my magazine has developed in terms of production.

Photography:
It is clear how much my photography has progressed through doing extensive research and modelling my magazine from others that are existing in the media. In my preliminary magazine, it is clear that I have used no form of lighting to highlight the model or features of the magazine. I based by photograph heavily on natural light through making the model stand next to a window. When the magazine had been produced, I realised that I needed to use special lighting in order to highlight certain parts on the magazine, such as the model's face. I chose in my final magazine to use lighting to illuminate the model's face, rather than using natural lighting. This would appeal more to my target audience as their face will be the most dominant feature on the magazine cover. In my preliminary magazine, I chose to use the prop of a sign to show the features that the magazine could include such as information about the Sixth Form. As the picture was taken on an angle, it is difficult to read what is on the sign, therefore not being the best way to show the genre. In contrast, I chose to use a plain background on my final magazine to make the headlines stand out, unlike the preliminary magazine where the headlines blend in with the background. I chose to use a plain background to contrast the colour of the models clothing.

Colours/ House Style:
In my preliminary magazine, I chose to use the house style of green and white. I chose to use green as it has connotations of money, which students are likely to be interested in. I chose the colour white to show purity and to contrast the colour green. Although, as I wasn't confident with using Photoshop, the colour green that I used is a dull shade, and would not stand out to the audience. I learned from this and changed the colour green on my final magazine to a brighter shade, having the connotations of 'GO' meaning readers will be interested in reading the magazine. I chose to keep the house style of my magazine the same, but adding black to make it easier for readers to interoperate whilst making the colours I chose brighter, to stand out to the audience.

Techniques:
The techniques I used on my preliminary magazine were very basic as I was new to using the software. I used features on my preliminary magazine such as the grid and the text tool. From the image above, it is clear that I was unaware of the many features I could used within the programme. However, through watching tutorials on the internet, and doing research into the programme, I learned various features which I could use to improve my magazine and make it more appealing to my target audience. On my preliminary magazine, I used the text tool to insert the masthead. However, online I learned that I was able to place a drop shadow on the masthead to emphasise the name of the magazine and making it stand out to readers. I was also able to use a contrasting tool to brighten the image rather than placing the photograph on the front cover without editing it like I did in my preliminary magazine.
